Hoyer Statement on Nomination of Richard Cordray as Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau; Democrats Fighting for Balanced Agreement to Pay America's Bills, Reduce the Hoyer Statement on Republicans' Energy; and Water Appropriations Bill Deficit, Protect the Middle Class and Seniors

From: Democratic Whip Press To: tatiana10@013.net Sent: Tuesday, July 19, 2011 Hoyer Statement on Nomination of Richard Cordray as Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Obama nominated Richard Cordray as the Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau: “I welcome President Obama’s nomination of Richard Cordray as the Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. As Attorney General of Ohio and the head of the Bureau’s enforcement arm, Richard Cordray has built a strong record of standing up for the middle class. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was created to bring fairness to the financial services on which millions of Americans rely, and to prevent a recurrence of a financial crisis caused by Wall Street recklessness and lax regulation. “In 2008, just such a crisis destroyed millions of jobs and threw millions of Americans’ savings, retirements, and futures into doubt. Now, when we are still feeling the effects of that crisis, it is deeply disturbing that Republicans are fighting to undermine Wall Street reform, dismantle consumer protections, and leave America open to another job-destroying financial meltdown. I am confident that the new Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will defend and faithfully execute its important mission. I also want to thank Elizabeth Warren for her farsighted work in conceiving and setting up our country’s much-needed consumer protections. I am grateful for her service and her commitment to fair play for our middle class.” Democrats Fighting for Balanced Agreement to Pay America's Bills, Reduce the Deficit, Protect the Middle Class and Seniors MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP This week, House and Senate leaders spent five straight days meeting with the President to discuss how we can work together to ensure America pays its bills and reduce the deficit. I still strongly support a big compromise measure that would bring down the deficit in a balanced way, including both spending cuts and revenues. President Obama and Democratic leaders all agree we should pursue a grand bargain, and I hope Republicans work with us to meet this moment of opportunity to do something meaningful to strengthen our nation’s fiscal health. But unfortunately Republicans have remained steadfast in their policy of protecting tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, while advocating ending Medicare. Next week, Republicans will consider a bill that doesn’t address the need to pay our nation’s bills and would call for drastic, harmful cuts to programs that millions of Americans depend on. This bill is not a solution to our fiscal challenges. Democrats will oppose this plan and continue fighting for a balanced approach to ensure we pay our nation’s bills, reduce our deficit and protect the middle class, seniors and the most vulnerable among us. I was disappointed this week that House Republicans let another week go by without bringing a jobs bill to the Floor. Since taking the majority six months ago, Republicans have only passed one jobs bill and still do not have a comprehensive jobs agenda. Democrats, on the other hand, are focused on getting Americans back to work and have pursued the Make It In America agenda, a plan to support job creation by providing an encouraging environment for businesses to innovate and make products in the U.S. This is an agenda everyone can support and I hope Republicans will work with us to help spur job creation, grow our economy and ensure the middle class can Make It In America. Sincerely yours, Hoyer Statement on Republicans' Energy and Water Appropriations Bill WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Republicans' Energy and Water Appropriations bill: “I opposed the Republicans’ Energy and Water Appropriations bill, as it undermines our nation’s ability to keep our lakes, rivers and streams clean. The bill restricts the Corps of Engineers' ability to work with the EPA to protect our waterways under the Clean Water Act. This bill also makes shortsighted cuts to our energy efficiency and renewable energy programs – programs that will pay for themselves in the long run by supporting the development of groundbreaking clean energy technologies that will save consumers money on their energy bills and create the jobs that will help more families Make It In America. “In addition, this bill once again tries to repeal lightbulb efficiency standards that could save consumers billions of dollars every year. While Americans are focused on job creation and reducing the deficit, Republicans are once again spending their time trying to repeal lightbulb standards that originally passed with widespread bipartisan support and are supported by the industry. This is yet another example of how Republicans are not focused on the issues that matters most to the American people.”
