Democrats are committed to restoring fiscal discipline and cutting spending, and the bill introduced today will provide another tool for us to do that. Under expedited rescission, Congress and the President can work together to cut wasteful, duplicative spending. I hope my Republican colleagues back up their calls for reduced spending with action and join us in moving this bill forward

From: Democratic Whip Press To: tatiana10@013.net Hoyer Statement on "Reduce Unnecessary Spending Act of 2011" WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in support of the “Reduce Unnecessary Spending Act of 2011,” introduced today by House Budget Committee Ranking Member Chris Van Hollen. “ Democrats are committed to restoring fiscal discipline and cutting spending, and the bill introduced today will provide another tool for us to do that. Under expedited rescission, Congress and the President can work together to cut wasteful, duplicative spending. I hope my Republican colleagues back up their calls for reduced spending with action and join us in moving this bill forward” Hoyer Statement on Earthquake in Japan, Tsunami Affecting the Pacific Region WASHINGTON, DC - Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today regarding the earthquake in Japan and tsunami affecting the Pacific region: “Our thoughts are with the people of Japan in the wake of today’s devastating earthquake and tsunami. Though the full extent of the damage is not yet clear, we do know that Japan has suffered widespread loss of life and destruction of property—and those who have suffered from this horrific natural disaster should know that they have the world’s sympathy, and that we continue to hold them in our prayers. As President Obama made clear, the United States stands ready to assist Japan as it begins its recovery efforts. “As a result of the earthquake, tsunami warnings have been issued for nations across the Pacific, including island and coastal areas of the United States. I hope that all those in the affected areas will take the appropriate precautions, as recommended by the local authorities.” Hoyer Statement on Housing Bills on the Floor This Week WASHINGTON, DC - Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement regarding Republican housing bills on the Floor this week: “We need to do more to address the foreclosure crisis in this country, but the Republican housing bills on the floor this week are not the answer. By only proposing to terminate housing programs and not offering any solutions of their own to help responsible middle class American families stay in their homes, these bills are not the way forward. So far, Republicans have not put forth a jobs plan, have not put forth a real health care reform plan and today, it is clear they have no plan to help middle class families stay in their homes. “I hope that both sides can come together and work on this pressing problem, to help those who have been hardest hit by this crisis and deserve assistance.” Hoyer Floor Statement on the Real Budget Story WASHINGTON, DC - Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) delivered a Morning Hour speech today regarding the current budget debate and how we must look at the entire budget, not just discretionary spending, to solve our budget challenge. See below for a link to the video and his remarks as prepared for delivery: “In recent weeks, I’ve come to the floor to argue that the Republican spending plan does two extremely harmful things: it weakens our economy and fails to seriously reduce our debt. Democrats agree that cutting spending is part of the solution to our deficit problem—but we also believe that cuts should be smart and targeted, not reckless. Hoyer Statement on House Bipartisan Legal Advisory Vote to Defend DOMA WASHINGTON, DC - Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the House Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group voted to intervene in litigation pertaining to the Defense of Marriage Act: “Today, I attended a meeting of the House Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group, which voted to intervene in litigation pertaining to the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in court. I voted against this decision. I believe that the Administration is correct in concluding that DOMA is unconstitutional and discriminatory. There is ample precedent for the Justice Department’s decision not to defend this statute: since 1979, both Democratic and Republican Administrations have declined to defend acts of Congress on more than 50 occasions. In fact, it is rare for the House to intervene in defense of statutes that the Justice Department has declined to defend. I am appointed in Republicans’ dis decision today." Hoyer Statement on Chairman King's Hearing WASHINGTON, DC - Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement regarding Homeland Security Committee Chairman Peter King's hearing on "The Extent of Radicalization in the American Muslim Community and that Community’s Response” being held tomorrow: “I believe this hearing would have been more useful had it taken a broader look at domestic terror and radicalization. As currently structured, however, I believe it sends the wrong message to the Muslim-American community. We need them to work with law enforcement to identify terrorist threats, not be afraid of them. We all need to work together to keep our nation and Americans safe, and we need everyone’s cooperation to do so. Targeting one segment of our population is not helpful to that objective.” Hoyer: Failure of Republican Spending Bill Shows Republicans Must Compromise WASHINGTON, DC - Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Senate failed to pass the Republican Spending Bill and the Democrats' compromise measure: “Now that the Senate has failed to pass either the Republican spending bill or the Democrats’ compromise measure, it is time for negotiations on a long-term solution to continue. Democrats have come more than halfway to Republicans' demand of 100 billion in spending cuts, and yet Republicans have so far refused to move an inch from their one and only proposal. Since their proposal has failed in the Senate, Republicans must now put forward a real compromise measure that backs away from their reckless and arbitrary spending cuts that would cost thousands of jobs. We need to make smart spending cuts while protecting investments in our nation’s future.” Republicans Ignore Americans’ Call for Spending Cuts Compromise According to a Bloomberg poll released today, 8 in 10 Americans want Republicans and Democrats to reach a compromise on spending cuts. Democrats agree that we need to cut and compromise on spending so that we can reduce the deficit while protecting investments that grow the economy and create jobs. That’s why Democrats have moved halfway to Republicans’ $100 billion demand. But Republicans have ignored the message Americans are sending, and have not moved an inch from their one and only proposal. Democrats agreed to $41 billion in spending cuts: Republicans demand $100 billion in spending cuts. Democrats agreed to $45 billion in spending cuts: Republicans demand $100 billion in spending cuts. Democrats agreed to $51 billion in spending cuts: Republicans demand $100 billion in spending cuts. Notice a trend? While the Democrats have met Republicans halfway, Republicans refuse to offer anything but their “So Be It” Spending Bill—a plan that independent economists say will cost hundreds of thousands of jobs. With an overwhelming majority of Americans calling for Congress to find common ground, the ball is in Republicans’ court to put forward a new measure and show Americans where they are willing to compromise. Hoyer Statement on the Passing of David Broder WASHINGTON, DC - Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) issued the following statement today following the passing of David Broder, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist for The Washington Post: “I am saddened by the death of esteemed journalist David Broder. For decades, David brought our country a wealth of fair and evenhanded reporting, analysis, and commentary—work that was valued for its insights on both sides of the aisle. The respect that David garnered as ‘Dean’ of the Washington press corps was well-earned. His tireless work to keep the public informed, and his contributions to American journalism, will be sorely missed.”
